A Whelping Date Calculator That Earns Its Estimate

Last Reviewed: June 19, 2026. Written and reviewed by the BreederHQ Operations Team, working with active dog breeders.

Every breeder eventually learns that "63 days from breeding" is wrong more often than it is right. Canine gestation is 63 days from ovulation, not from breeding, and the gap between those two dates can be anywhere from a few hours to nearly a week. That is why progesterone testing matters and why a whelping calculator that asks for the right input matters too.

What the Calculator Projects

Estimated Due Date

From a confirmed ovulation date: 63 days out, give or take a day. From a breeding date alone: 60 to 65 days out as the most likely window. From a first-day-of-heat estimate: a wider 60 to 70 day window. The calculator picks the appropriate confidence interval based on which date you enter.

Normal Due Window

Most healthy dams whelp between day 58 and day 68 measured from breeding. Inside that range, a few days early or late is not an emergency. Outside it, vet contact is warranted. The calculator shows the window so you know when to stay calm and when to call.

Prenatal Vet Milestones

Ultrasound around day 28 to day 30 confirms pregnancy and gives a rough count. X-ray from day 55 onward gives an accurate puppy count and head-size assessment. The calculator surfaces these dates so they go on the calendar instead of getting forgotten.

Whelping-Prep Timeline

Whelping box ready by day 55. Supply kit ready by day 55. Temperature monitoring twice daily from day 56. Vet emergency number on the fridge by day 55. The calculator places these on the same timeline as the due date so prep is not last-minute.

Post-Whelping Milestones

First puppy weights at birth. Eyes opening around day 10 to day 14. Deworming starting around day 14 and continuing on schedule. First vaccinations around day 42 to day 49. Go-home week around day 56 to day 70 depending on breed and program. All on the same timeline as the due date.

What a Whelping Calculator Cannot Tell You

The Exact Due Date Without Progesterone

Without confirmed ovulation, the due date is a window, not a point. That is the biology, not a limitation of the tool. Progesterone testing during the breeding cycle is what turns a five-day window into a one-day estimate.

Whether the Dam Will Need a C-Section

That comes from x-ray puppy count and head-size assessment, breed-typical labor patterns, and observed labor progression. The calculator surfaces the dates to do those assessments; the vet makes the call.

Litter Size

Calendar math does not produce a litter count. Ultrasound at day 28 gives a rough estimate; x-ray after day 55 gives an accurate one. The calculator schedules both.
