How to Browse on the Marketplace
Filters that matter for finding the right groomer:
- Species and breed expertise. A groomer who does Yorkies all day is not the same as one who hand-strips Wire Fox Terriers. Filter to actual breed experience, not "all breeds."
- Coat-type specialty. Double coats, drop coats, wire coats, curly coats, and silky coats all require different tools, time, and technique.
- Mobile or salon. Mobile groomers come to you and often work one animal at a time. Salons offer more equipment, multi-animal scheduling, and lower per-visit cost.
- Show vs. pet grooming. Show grooming is a different craft: pattern work, hand-stripping, blending, and breed standard adherence. Pet grooming is faster and more practical.
What to Look For When Hiring a Groomer
- A portfolio of your breed (or coat type). Photos of finished work in your breed beat any credential. If they don't have photos of your coat type, ask why.
- A clear policy on senior, anxious, or reactive animals. Groomers who specialize in difficult animals will say so. Groomers who don't should refer out.
- Honest time estimates. A breed-correct Bichon trim takes time. A 45-minute "full groom" on a heavy double coat is rushing the work.
- Sanitation and recovery space. Clean tables, fresh blades between dogs, and a calm holding area between bath and table.
- Credentials matched to the work. NDGAA, ISCC, breed-club mentorships, and certified master groomer titles signal show-grooming depth.
